Caption: One of the best treatments for diarrhea is rehydration. As a rule of thumb, a sugar salt solution consisting of 6 teaspoons of sugar and 0.5 teaspoons of salt should work for mild diarrhea.
Why does this work for Hydration?
You're body loses essential electrolytes and sugar with diarrhea. This formula replaces these, along with fluids.
Why can't we just use water?
Giving just water is not as good for hydrating as your body needs sugar and salt to hold on to water. Your intestines and kidneys use sodium to "hold on" to water. Without enough electrolytes, drinking pure water will lead fluids simply "passing through" the body.
Why do we need the sugar?
Your intestines have a separate mechanism for handling sugar absorption, a mechanism that also transports water molecules from your intestines into your bloodstream.
